Broadway actor Nick Cordero woke from a COVID-19-induced coma after several weeks, according to his wife, Amanda Kloots, who announced the development this week.
“Nick, dada, is awake!” Kloots
said in a social media video, showing her with their child. “Finally confirmed after two days of, ‘Is he doing this?’ You get so excited, the nurses are like, ‘We think this is happening.’ The doctor confirmed today that, ‘Yep, I think Nick is awake.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God.’”
Cordero, who appeared in “A Bronx Tale” and “Bullets Over Broadway,” contracted the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus in March and was on a respirator at a hospital in Los Angeles. He was placed in a medically induced coma in early April, according to his wife, who announced that his
right leg was amputated after he developed a blood clot.
Kloots added to
CNN that her husband’s “lungs are severely damaged” from the disease, adding that doctors told her they “look almost like he’s been a smoker for 50 years.”
“It’s just been this heaviness that’s kind of held over us for this time,” Kloots
told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on May 13. She added: “The doctor said, ‘I think we can officially say he is awake’—and, I mean, that was just the best news you could hear.”
“But he is following commands which means his mental status is coming back this is a long road, a very long road. We are on our way,” she told
People magazine.
When his leg was amputated in mid-April, Kloots said that blood thinners prescribed by doctors to help with blood clots in his right leg caused problems with his blood pressure.
“He made it through the surgery, which is really big,” she
said at the time, giving an update to his followers on the surgery. “They’re taking him back to the room to recover and rest for the rest of the night, so hopefully he’ll just kind of relax and rest.”
According to People’s report, Kloots said Cordero, 41, had no pre-existing health problems and has since tested negative for the CCP virus, a novel coronavirus that emerged in mainland China last year.
“He went to the ER on March 30th and intubated on a ventilator on April 1,” Kloots also remarked.
Cordero’s theater roles also include “Waitress” and “Rock of Ages.” On TV, the actor has appeared in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Blue Bloods,” “Going in Style,” “Stand Up Guy,” and others.
