BOSTON—The city of Boston, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, and Historic Tours of America are collaborating to renovate Boston’s Tea Party museum and ships.
The site of one of the most pivotal moments leading to the American Revolution is finally getting rebuilt after a lightning-sparked fire destroyed it in 1991.
According to the Boston Herald, the renovation will cost $25 million. The funds will go toward rebuilding the ships at the location where American colonists dumped tea into the harbor as an act of protest against the Tea Act.
The Convention Center Authority has loaned $18 million to the Historic Tours of America for the project. Historic Tours will contribute $4 million. The city of Boston has also given $3 million, reports AP. In 2006, the renovation would have cost $14 million, the Boston Herald reported.
The project is expected to end by the summer of 2011, when it will be opened to the public.
Some Boston residents have expressed concerns that the renovation comes at a bad time. For them, the renovation of the museum is a luxury, which the city cannot afford to pay right now.
Instead, the city should be using the money to improve education or more immediate job-creating projects, they suggest.
