Bones season 9 is nearing the end with five episodes left in the season, including episode 20 on April 21.

Titled “The Nail in the Coffin,” the episode will feature the return of the Ghost Killer and the uncovering of a complex plot.

“We'll be revisiting the Ghost Killer in episode 20. And we will find that the Ghost Killer is just the tip of an iceberg,” said executive producer Stephen Nathan to Zap2It.

“It is going to lead us into a big conspiracy that appears as if it goes back to the FBI,” Nathan adds. “So it’s a way for us to do a continuing story that doesn’t revolve around one murderer. It takes us down the rabbit hole in a way that’s a little more complicated and a little darker than we have in the past.”

In fact, the Ghost Killer arc could be wrapped up by episode 21, Nathan told a blog earlier this year. He also confirmed that the Ghost Killer has been on screen before.

The official description of the episode is: “The Jeffersonian team investigates the death of Stephanie McNamara, the daughter of a wealthy family whose remains were found in a national park. When the team digs deeper into the circumstances surrounding her death, clues from the case lead them to believe she may be the Ghost Killer’s latest victim, with a surprising connection to a previous victim. Meanwhile, the FBI Deputy Director takes a special interest in the team’s high-profile case and Booth’s career may be in for some changes.”

There’s no description out yet for the season finale but some spoilers have been coming out.

Nathan revealed to TVLine that season 9 will end the year “in a very surprising way.”

“Two different stories converge and it throws Booth and Brennan’s work relationship into turmoil and causes big, big changes for our people,” he said.

He added that there are lots of disgusting bodies coming.

“We try to make them all equally revolting,” Nathan said. “The season finale has a delightfully revolting body. We have somebody coming up who has been discovered wrapped in kudzu. But really I think one of the most revolting places we find some remains coming up is in a septic tank.”

One of the stories centers on a promotion that Booth appears to be in line for in the FBI while the other involves the Ghost Killer.
