NEW YORK—Actress Blake Lively, star of Gossip Girl, unveiled the Swarovski crystal star tree topper, which was hoisted on top of the Rockefeller Christmas tree on Thursday.
“I’m so excited to be here unveiling the star today,” said Lively. “Growing up my whole life I would always come to New York for Christmas,” she said adding that the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is a New York staple.
Lively was joined by Livia Marotta, Swarovski head of communications who welcomed everyone to the special unveiling of the 2010 Swarovski star.
“It’s just a very special day and we really cherish the opportunity to offer a symbol of the holidays to the millions of visitors who come here to Rockefeller Center,” said Marotta.
This year marks the seventh year a Swarovski star has topped the Rockefeller tree. It was newly redesigned in 2009 to better capture vibrant light movement. The 9.5-foot star alone features 720 LED bulbs and weighs a total of 550 pounds, 300 of which are comprised of the 25,000 crystals that provide the star with great luminosity.
The 74-foot Norway Spruce Christmas tree will be lit in a live ceremony followed by performances on Tuesday, Nov. 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rockefeller Plaza. Thirty thousand eco-friendly LED lights will adorn the iconic Christmas tree.
The tree, currently covered by scaffolding will be ready to shine in the event that will be televised by NBC around the world. Holiday classics will be performed by Susan Boyle, Mariah Carey, Charice, Sheryl Crow, Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins, Annie Lennox, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Simpson and The Radio City Rockettes during the lighting ceremony.
This year marks the 78th annual Rockefeller tree lighting ceremony, which began in 1933 when the first tree had a mere 700 lights.
According to NYC.com, people across the United States send in photos of their trees hoping theirs will be chosen for the Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree. Once selected the lucky tree is transported to the center escorted by police in the middle of the night not to disrupt traffic.
“We are very pleased that Blake Lively could join us in celebrating the season and welcoming the Swarovski star back to Rockefeller Center where visitors from around the world can appreciate its captivating brilliance,” said Kevin Coen, executive vice president of Swarovski North America Limited’s Consumer Goods Business in a statement.
