A young couple had tried nearly everything to conceive and start their family yet were unable to. As they were about to give up hope, an opportunity arose to foster a newborn. An even greater surprise came later when they found themselves adopting that same baby.
When the couple sought medical help, Sadie heard that her weight was in the way of getting pregnant. So she underwent weight loss surgery in February 2019 and managed to lose an impressive 26 pounds (approx. 12 kg) within a month. However, in spite of her weight loss, the young woman was still not conceiving. “So, we gave up,” she wrote. “We realized that we were only destined to be an aunt and uncle to our nieces and God parents to our God daughters.”
However, something changed shortly thereafter when Sadie received an out-of-the-blue text from a friend asking, “... would you guys foster/adopt a child?” As it turned out, Sadie’s friend knew a couple who were looking to find foster parents for their son. That very same day, Sadie was on the phone with a caseworker asking if she and her husband were willing to foster the newborn for up to a year.
It wasn’t an easy decision because the couple “worried about how we would care for a child for so long and not get attached,” she wrote, adding that they “prayed and decided that if there was a child in need, we wanted to help.”
But the biggest surprise came the following day when the caseworker called again. “The birth mom decided she would like you guys to adopt the child instead,” Sadie recalled her words on the phone. Saying that she was amazed at the news would be an understatement. “We went from not having any children to the possibility of fostering one, to, ‘You guys are parents!’ overnight,” Sadie wrote.
Baby Ezra was born prematurely and had to spend several days in NICU. As the adoption was arranged privately, all the couple needed to do was sign paperwork with an attorney. And they only got to meet him an hour before they had to sign the adoption papers. “He was so tiny, swaddled in a white blanket, with pink and blue stripes. He had an NG tube coming out of his nose because he couldn’t eat on his own since he was premature,” Sadie wrote.
After seeing him, the young woman was still in disbelief. “It took a while for me to realize that he is my son, and I am his mom,” she said. However, Sadie spent every day at the hospital until her baby was healthy enough to go home.
“‘Not showing, still glowing!’ Grateful doesn’t even sum up how we feel to have our son. We had one plan, and God changed the game completely. We found out about our son when he was 1.5 weeks old. We literally became parents overnight. Families DON'T have to match! They are built on LOVE!” she wrote at the end of her heartwarming anecdote.
