Christmas in NYC is special!
The holiday season in New York is really like no other place. There are far more things to do than can be done, and giving your time to a worthy organization has its own special rewards. I have included information on the New York Rescue Mission as an example, but there are many places and causes that would appreciate your time and effort (and of course donations are always welcome.)
GIVING: Don’t be a Grinch, give back. Here is one way: The New York Rescue Mission, the first rescue mission in America, was started in 1872. To volunteer in any of their many categories, contact them at 90 Lafayette St., NYC 10013, 212 226-6214, or nycrescue.org.
THEATER: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. This Grinch not only stole Christmas, Shuler Hensley as the Grinch stole the show. This is a must see for the kids. As this show is a Christmas special, it only runs until Dec. 28, but definitely worth finding time to fit it in. The show runs 90 minutes. Radio City Spectacular. Yes this is worth another mention because it is a unique and stunning production and so New York. It takes advantage of every technical advancement for the production, and OMG those Rockettes. Show runs 90 minutes. Only until Dec. 31 at Radio City Music Hall, 50th and 6th Ave. Check online for discounts or at radio-city-christmas.seats.com or call Ticketmaster at 212 247-4777.
Side Show. Producers had a dream to remount this show about the famous Siamese twins, Daisy and Violet Hilton. The has all the necessary components for a long run, but despite rave reviews, the final performance will be Jan. 4th, so get your tickets now. The show runs 2 hours, 30 minutes at St. James Theatre, 246 W. 44th St., or call Telecharge at 212 239-6200.
Cafe Society Swing. For jazz aficionados and those who just love great music, this production taps the top performers of the NY jazz community, with singers Cyrille Aimee, Charenee Wade, Allen Harris, and actor/singer Evan Pappas. Alex Webb wrote the show and also serves as its musical director. The theater is small (200 seats) and the run is limited (Jan. 4) but the effort is worth it. DANCE: Alvin Ailey. You are allowed to gawk at the fabulous bodies of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company as they perform the tried and true as well as new pieces like “Odetta,” which paid tribute to the late great singer and civil rights activist.
