Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is a thing of the past.
Warner Bros. just announced that Affleck alone will star in the next “Batman” movie.
“We’re working with Ben Affleck on a standalone Batman movie,” said Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara at CinemaCon, the yearly gathering of theater owners in Las Vegas.
“Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” has been a box office hit, with approximately $800 million grossed to date and recording the highest opening weekend for Easter, with $27.7 million on Thursday night—despite dismal reviews and suffering a second week slide.
The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that “Batman” will also be directed by Affleck, who received high praise for his portrayal of the fictional character.
There were rumors surrounding Affleck starring in a standalone “Batman” when Deadline reported in July last year that the actor was co-writing a script for the superhero flick with DC Comics’ chief creative officer, Geoff Johns. Johns is behind “Green Lantern,” “Justice League,” “The Flash,” and “Superman.”
Warner Bros. hasn’t announced any more details, including an exact release date, but have reserved two slots for Oct. 5, 2018, and Nov. 1, 2019, for “untitled” DC movies. According to Tsujihara, DC Comics has “at least 10 movies through 2020.”
