According to the “Apple Daily” on May 4th, the Beijing Internet Management Office issued an injunction prohibiting posting of any swine flu report except those taken from the Beijing Daily and the official Qianlong Net website.
The injunction also stated that all news-related threads were forbidden to include the topic of the Beijing Epidemic Prevention Department’s medical observations.
Furthermore, the department has also requested that the media regulate their epidemic reports. This includes not exceeding one line of text for the headline of swine flu reports; the use of official news sources; and emphasizing active prevention and control instead of the results of the epidemic and spreading panic among the people.
On May 3rd, the Health Department required daily internal reports and zero published reports from areas that have quarantined and observed people who came in close contact with the swine flu. Health Department personnel said that the public will not be informed of these reports unless cases of the swine flu have been confirmed.
Reports also reveal that cases of the swine flu were detected in Guangzhou, but the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department banned the media from reporting this news until the cases were confirmed.
