NEW YORK—Bedbugs, the bloodsucking creatures that put the whole city on alert last summer, are expected to make an even more vicious comeback in June.

Infestations will be more prevalent than last year. According to Bedbug Central expert and research entomologist Jeffrey White, bedbug reports for January and February 2011 show a 30 percent increase over the same period last year.

While bedbugs can infest everywhere, common public places that have reports of bedbugs include movie theaters, office buildings, and hotels. But overall, White says that it is “almost impossible to predict” where bedbugs hide.

“The government can educate people, tell people how to detect them and not to take them home. For example if you have back packs, do not put them underneath the bed because that is where bedbugs always hide,” said White.

White also suggests that if in doubt, calling for professional inspection and checking and cleaning spring boxes and underneath the bed are immediate solutions.

Bedbug Central is an organization that includes experts, product manufacturers and research professionals seeking solutions to bedbugs. Its website hosts a show called Bedbug Central TV that introduces tips on how to prevent and deal with bedbug infestations.
