Audi is unsurprisingly on the pole for the 80th running of the Le Mans 24 Hours, but Toyota broke the Audi stranglehold on the front two rows by qualifying third and fifth.
Marcel Fässler put the No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro on the pole with a lap of 3:23.787 at 149.63 mph, 0.291 seconds faster than the time of 3:24.078 set by Marc Gené in the No. 3 R18 Ultra in the afternoon session
Anthony Davis in the No. 8 Toyota TS030 turned in a lap of 3:24.842 at 148.83 mph, to dislodge the No. 2 e-tron from third place, and Kaz Nakajima in the No. 7 Toyota set a time of 3:25.488 to edge out the second R18 Ultra. 2.633 seconds cover the top six cars; if Toyota has the reliability to match Audi, it certain has the pace.
The fastest privateer P1 was the Straka Racing HPD-ARX-03a, 5.835 seconds off the pole.
The #16 Pescarolo 03 made it out of the garage in time to qualify 13th; unfortunately its sister car, the Dome Judd, went off hard at the Porsche Curves. It is not yet known if the car can be repaired in time for the race. Driver Seija Ara was not injured.
Jan Charouz in the #25 ADR-Delta Oreca-Nissan topped the highly competitive P2 field with a s lap of 3:38.181 at 139.75 mph, .0417 seconds faster than the second-place Oak Racing Morgan Judd. 0.7 seconds covered the first through seventh P2s; 1.5 seconds covered the top ten.
In GTE-Pro, Frederic Makowiecki in the No. 59 Luxury Racing Ferrari took the pole with a lap of 3:55.393, edging out the Aston Martin Racing Vantage by .477.
In GTE-Am, the #79 Flying Lizard Porsche set fastest lap at 3:57.594.
