A consummate fashion designer is one who can dress many shapes and sizes and get it right every time.
So it is with Donatella Versace, whose glamorous gowns graced the red carpet at the 65th Cannes Film Festival, repeatedly garnering the favor of critics worldwide.
According to the website Red Carpet Fashion Awards, “She started dressing a 74-year-old beauty and ended with a stunning maternity gown proving she knows how to dress every woman for every occasion.”
That 74-year-old beauty is Jane Fonda, who looked stunning in an age-defying bronze gown that shimmered on the red carpet.
The stars came out in full glamour and bold hues: Jada Pinkett Smith in tangerine, Rose McGowan in pink, and Freida Pinto in yellow, showing off the trademark colorful palette and detailing of the Versace label. Each gown displayed feminine beauty and elegance, while also remaining true to the fashion house’s edgier style.
Proving her versatility as a designer, Versace also created the blue silk chiffon maternity gown worn by Reese Witherspoon. The gown sparkled with Swarovski crystals and had a cutout back. It also provided extra support with strategically placed double straps.
It was certainly refreshing to see Versace exercise her range as a designer—fitting each woman’s distinct figure beautifully.
Born in the Italian town of Reggio di Calabria in 1955, Donatella was the youngest of four children and sister to Gianni, the fashion company’s founder and chief designer until his murder in 1997.
She currently oversees production of about a dozen collections every year. Versus—a label given to her by her brother—has been successful for more than a decade. Celebrities adore her styles, which have earned her a loyal following from Elizabeth Hurley to Jennifer Lopez.
Under Donatella Versace’s watchful eye, the company has expanded beyond clothing into a complete lifestyle brand including accessories, home furnishings, and hotels.
