During the London Marathon on Sunday, people were spotted stealing bottled water that was left for runners who participated.
A video and photos of the alleged looting went viral online. The water was left on the side of the road.
Mark Hudson posted a clip to his Facebook, which appears to show people filling their pockets with Buxton water.
“Hard times in Deptford,” a man sarcastically says in the video, as reported by The Metro.
“The water supply has not reached here yet,” he adds. “As you can see by all the locals… trying to nick all the water that is actually for the Marathon runners.”
It’s a “sad state,” he then added.
According to MailOnline, the looting took place right after the 26.2-mile race started.
One man even brought a cart with him to pile up packages of water.
Hugh Brasher, Event Director for London Marathon Events, told the paper that the incident was “very disappointing.”
“These water stations are staffed by volunteers and we are very grateful to them for their work on Race Day,” he added. “We always brief our volunteers not to get into altercations if this kind of thing happens. We'll investigate this further.”
Another witness saw the whole thing unfold.
“I just find that absolutely disgusting, absolutely appalling. I wouldn’t know why they would do that,” he said. “Why would you go crazy - like animals - and steal all the water? I think it’s absolutely vile behavior. They were young and old.”
