TAICHUNG, Taiwan—Chen Lizhen, artistic director of the Xaingyun Musical Instrument Company, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts’ second show in Taichung on the afternoon of March 8.

After seeing the performance, she was very pleased. “It is indeed very meaningful to spread Oriental arts, traditional Chinese philosophies, and aesthetics to various countries around the world,” she said. “Shen Yun’s music symbolizes the trend for music of the future.”

She also expressed that “It’s very meaningful to let people know more about China and to promote traditional culture to the outside world.”

Ms. Chen is a devoted artist who earned her Master’s degree in music education while in Canada. She has taught music for more than 10 years in Taichung.

Being familiar with musical and artistic tendencies, her ideas on Shen Yun stem from the standpoint of her professional opinion. “From the perspective of the arts, I think the synchronization of colors was very wonderful, and it made the audience feel very comfortable—as if they were in the plot,” she said.

“Each program’s title, backdrops, costumes, and actors’ bearing conformed to the characteristics of each performance’s depicted era.”

Ms. Chen was especially taken by one performance in particular. “The ensemble of the backdrops and the costumes in the program Han Imperial Air made people feel as if it was really in the Han Dynasty,“ she said. ”It fully demonstrated the spirits of the Han Dynasty.”

“The magnificent and majestic atmosphere made the audience feel the prosperity and affluence during that period of time. It left a very good impression on me,” she added.

In terms of Shen Yun’s music, she was just as pleased. “As for the music—it’s really great,” she said. “The seamless blend of the Eastern and Western instruments made it feel that the tones could actually be changed variably. With the Chinese instruments, there were surprises from time to time. Take the suona for instance: With its coordination with the Western instruments, I felt it was very comforting, and it is very different from the music of other countries.”

She stressed that the music seems to transcend all times, past and present. “I feel that the music in the future will probably be like that,” she said. “I felt it was very special.”

“Take the dance Sewing the Flowers of Heaven from the second half of the show for instance: While the backdrops in the last program were full of blossoming flowers, the timbre of the music was very touching,“ she added. ”It produced unique interactions of both Eastern and Western instrumentation. I feel it is very special, as if it is the music of the future.”

“Shen Yun really touched my heart, and I felt it in a very special way,” she said. “People nowadays are very busy. Being an artist, I am also quite busy with things such as management, administration, and personnel affairs. But seeing Shen Yun show made me tranquil.”

“At work from time to time, we may have conflicts with others such as with students’ parents,” she said. “I feel that this kind of performance can help us calm down. So, I am thinking of buying a Shen Yun Orchestra CD and sharing it with my students’ parents.”

Before leaving, Ms. Chen exclaimed, “I feel Shen Yun is indeed wonderful! I feel very happy that Shen Yun shares our Oriental culture with people around the world.”
