While the MTV Movies Awards, which aired on April 10, was all about the film industry, particularly “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”—winning the Movie of the Year award—Ariana Grande reminded viewers what the ‘M’ in MTV stands for: music.
The 22-year-old pop star performed her new single, “Dangerous Woman” in a backdrop that resembled old Hollywood glam.
Dressed in a pink gown and white fur shawl, Grande soulfully sang that “Don’t need permission/Made my decision to test my limits/'Cause it’s my business.” The former Nickelodeon actress was accompanied on stage by friend and pianist Jason Robert Brown.
Grande who has been compared to Mariah Carey, got her start on Nickelodeon as Cat on the sitcom, “Sam and Cat” and began to pursue music fulltime once the show was cancelled.
“I want to thank (series creator) Dan Schneider for allowing me to play such a special, beautiful character who I hid behind for so long. What I mean by that is when I was younger, people loved Cat so much I used to pretend to be more like her,” Grande wrote on her Facebook page after the cancellation of the show. “It took me a long time to be brave enough to separate myself and show people how different we actually are.”
The singer has two number one albums, “My Everything” and “Yours Truly” in her short career. She is nominated for two 2016 Billboard Music Awards.
