Is Hollywood’s largest annual award series confusing you with its name? One minute you are reading about the Academy Awards, and the next second you are reading about The Oscars. Well, there is good reason for the confusion.
The Academy Awards are undergoing a name change. It’s not going to be called the “85th Academy Awards.” It is now called, quite simply,“The Oscars.”
“We’re rebranding it,” Oscar show co-producer Neil Meron told TheWrap on Monday. “We’re not calling it ’the 85th annual Academy Awards,‘ which keeps it mired somewhat in a musty way. It’s called ’The Oscars.'” The name “Academy Awards” disappeared from the promotion materials for this year’s awards.
The Academy Awards, sorry—The Oscars, are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which is a professional honorary organization dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of motion pictures.
The first awards were presented in 1929 and have been held every year since then.
“It is right for this show, but we could easily go back to using ‘Academy Awards’ next year,”Teni Melidonian, Academy spokeswoman, told The Wrap.
So, roll out the red carpet for The Oscars.
