Many are wondering if banks are open or closed on New Year’s Eve. They'll definitely be closed on New Year’s Day, which is on Thursday.

But for New Year’s Eve--Wednesday, Dec. 31--the major banks will be open. Some banks might have shortened hours.

PNC Bank Close at 4 p.m.
Capital One Close at 2 p.m.
TD Bank Close at 6 p.m.

SunTrust Bank Normal hours
Citibank Normal hours

According to GoBankingRates.com:

You can stop by the following banks to take care of your financial transactions on Dec. 31.

  • Bank of the West
  • BB&T
  • BBVA Compass, all branches are offering normal hours.
  • KeyBank
  • M&T Bank

  • Santander  Bank, all branches will close at 3 p.m.
  • SunTrust Bank
  • TD Bank
  • U.S. Bank, some branches might be closed or have abbreviated hours.
  • Wells Fargo, some branches might have abbreviated hours.

GOBankingRates only listed the banks for which we could confirm New Year’s Eve hours. Banks not listed above will still likely be open on Dec. 31, but check with your local branch to be sure.

And despite there being shortened hours on New Year’s Eve, “checks that are deposited on these days (before the cut off time) will be processed as usual,” according to MyBankTracker.com.

“It usually takes one business day to process checks, but since the next day will be Christmas, the deposits will not be processed. At this point, the transactions presented to the account will be taken from the available balance,” it says.

On New Year’s Day. online banking and ATMs will still be available.

Government services will still be available on New Year’s Eve, and the stock market will be open but will close at 1 p.m.

Schools will be out, mail delivery will still come, and the vast majority of retailers will be open--although some might have shortened hours.
