It’s the oldest human settlement ever discovered in high altitude. Unearthed in the Peruvian Andes, the site is located nearly 14,700 ft above sea level.
This ancient site was occupied about 12,000 years ago.
But how did humans survive in frigid high altitude conditions, where there’s low oxygen and very high solar radiation?
Archaeologists excavating the site say the settlers seem to have colonized the remote treeless landscapes.
And evidence of bones at the site suggesting they hunted camel and lama-like animals for food and warmth.
