Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius plans to race at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City next month in order to qualify for South Africa’s Olympic team (as opposed to the Paralympics), according to a report by The Associated Press.
Pistorius is a four-time Paralympic gold medalist who races with carbon-fiber blades for legs.
This year’s meet is scheduled for June 9 at Randall’s Island. Pistorius also plans to run in the Prefontaine Classic on June 2 in Eugene, Ore.
Pistorius, who had both legs amputated below the knees as an 11-month-old, must run the 400m in 45.30 seconds or faster once more between now and June 30 to be eligible for selection for a trip to the London 2012 Olympics.
So far the 25-year-old Pistorius has posted two Olympic A-qualifying times, including his personal best a 45.07 seconds last July.
