A Minnesota family are searching for answers in the mysterious deaths of two sisters found dead in a luxury resort while vacationing in Seychelles.
Minnesota natives Annie Korkki, 37, who works for JP Morgan Chase in Denver, and Robin Korkki, 42, a trader from Chicago, were found unresponsive and ultimately pronounced dead in their villa at the Maia Luxury Resort and Spa on Sept. 22, reported the Seychelles Nation, the country’s newspaper.
They were scheduled to leave their upward $2,000 per night resort on Thursday after a week of vacationing but decided to extend their stay until Sept. 24.
Police said they were called to the room after a butler assigned to the villa of the sisters noticed no movement in their room throughout the day.
“From the observation done by our police officers, there was no disturbance in the room and the two sisters were found unresponsive on the same bed,” Police Spokesman Jean Toussaint said.
Preliminary examinations indicated that the bodies of the two sisters did not show any signs of trauma. Police confiscated certain medications from the scene for the purpose of the investigation.
According to hotel staff, the women were seen drinking throughout the day on Wednesday and needed help to their rooms at around 8:15 p.m. This was the last time either of the women were seen alive.
The sudden deaths of the sisters have shocked the Korkki family who said they have been kept in the dark about details surrounding the case.
“At this point, the only details we know are the articles flying around online,” brother Chris Korkki told the Minnesota Star Tribune. “My mom has been talking with people from the U.S. Embassy. I don’t think they’ve provided her with any information.”
He added, “Two things keep going through my mind: This isn’t happening, and we just want answers.”
Local authorities are working jointly with American authorities in the investigation as autopsy results are pending to determine the exact cause of death.
Seychelles is located more than 900 miles off Africa’s east coast in the Indian Ocean.
