Police in Brazil have rescued a very small animal that has been called “one of the most endangered primates in the Amazon.”

The Dodo reports that on Friday, a baby pied tamarin about the size of a human palm was rescued by the Environmental Police Battalion after being notified by a resident.

According to the website, the department posted about the incident on its Facebook page, writing, “The tamarin had injuries that may have been caused by dog bites or by falling to the ground. For that reason, it was referred to a wildlife refuge to receive appropriate veterinary treatment.”

Pied tamarins are New World monkeys found in the Amazon rainforest and around the city of Manaus where it is a local symbol. Adult members have a distinctive look, with white fur on the upper half of their bodies, brown fur on the lower, and bare, black faces.
