A 17-year-old student at Abraham Lincoln High School in Los Angeles got a perfect score on the AP calculus exam.
Cedric Argueta is one of only 12 students around the world to earn the perfect score, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Unified School District.
More than 300,000 students took the exam last year.
Argueta spent countless hours preparing with teacher Anthony Yom.
“He came to my honors algebra as a freshman,” Yom told ABC7. “He was a bit shy but as soon as I got some of his work, I saw what a bright kid he was.”
They often stayed two to five hours after school.
Argueta credits Yom with teaching him more than math.
“We are more than just student and teacher---we spend a lot of time, talk about of things, not just math,” he said.
“We make sure that our kids not only focus on math, but we have fun, too,” Yom said. “We’re changing the game here, and our students are learning they can master whatever the thing is that they want to do.”
Argueta is also skilled in other areas---he earned perfect scores on the English and math sections of the ACT college-entrance exam as well.
“It’s amazing. I’m so, so proud of him,” his mother told KTLA.
Argeuta plans to go to college at Caltech, and hopes to one day work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
