Jazz singer Abbey Lincoln died at her Manhattan home on Saturday, just a few days after her 80th birthday.

The singer, songwriter, and actress wrote and performed her own compositions, exceeding the expectations of jazz audiences.

The public first met Lincoln in 1956 when she started singing and starred in teen film The Girl Can’t Help It, in which she appeared in a dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe.

After meeting and later marrying jazz drummer Max Roach, she began to stand up for civil rights and fight against racism in the United States.

In the 1980s, Lincoln took up singing full time once again and her voice—probably grew stronger with her age—became full of emotion and passion. Her last album, Abbey Sings Abbey, released in 2007, is deemed as a jazz classic.

She had been under unstable physical condition since her open-heart surgery in 2007, but the precise cause of death is yet unknown, according to Wall Street Journal.
