NEW YORK— In this economic downturn, New Yorkers need freebies more than ever, and a free ferry ride across the East River to see your favorite home team play is a hit. Delta Air Lines has partnered with New York Water Taxi to offer free ferry rides for all regularly scheduled Mets and Yankees games for 2011.

“As the official airline of New York baseball, we know how much New Yorkers love their two hometown teams,” said Gail Grimmett, Delta’s senior vice president of operations in New York.

The free water taxi departs from Pier 17 (South Street Seaport) 90 minutes before scheduled game times. The ferry will make a stop at East 35th Street, before heading for the docks at Yankee Stadium and the World’s Fair Marina next to Citi Field.

The ferry water taxi assures fans that they will arrive at the stadiums about 30 minutes before the first pitch.

“This is the second year that Delta Air Lines has sponsored the free transportation to the Mets and Yankees baseball games,” said New York Water Taxi media spokesperson, Stacey Sherman.

Seating capacity of the ferry is limited to 147 passengers per game.

Baseball fans cannot make phone reservations for ferry tickets but pick up tickets at the New York Water Taxi ticket counter at Pier 17 two hours before the ferry departure time.

To guarantee transport to the game, fans are advised to book their tickets online. Seats can be reserved at a maximum of four tickets per person.

It is, however, a one-way ticket to the game; there is no post-game return free ferry ride back to Manhattan.
