The FBI is investigating a $625,000 gold heist at Miami International Airport earlier this week.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said the large quantities of gold bars were stolen after they were unloaded from a plane, reported NBC Miami. The theft took place after American Airlines Flight 902 from Guayaquil, Ecuador, arrived at the airport.

In the incident, a cart with the precious cargo was unloaded by five workers before it was moved to the other side of the plane. A tug from the gate then stopped at the cart, and the cart disappeared from video footage, according to NBC.

The cart was then found unloaded but without the package containing the gold bars.

“It is unknown who drove the property around to the other side of the plane and left the property there,” a police report said, according to WSVN-TV.

The FBI is currently investigating the matter but did not elaborate on the details. “The FBI is aware of the situation,” FBI spokesman Michael Leverock told Reuters.

Reuters points out that Miami International is used as a major shipment hub for gold produced in South America, which is then usually sent to Switzerland.

Police did not say who owned the gold or where it was heading.
