If the situation arises that you need to send a text message but can’t use your phone for any reason, check out these 5 ways to text from your laptop or desktop.

Email

To send a text via email, use the recipient’s phone number (including area code) and add the appropriate domain after it (who their provider is).

AT&T: @text.att.net

Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com

T-Mobile: @tmomail.net

Verizon: @vtext.com or @vzwpix.com for photos and videos

It’s as simple as that.  When they reply to your text message, you will receive it as an email.  If you type out a lengthy message it may need to be broken up into multiple text messages; that may be important to keep in mind if they are on a limited texting plan.

Your Carrier’s Website

Verizon Wireless and AT&T allow users to be able to send text messages through their account online.  There is no additional charge to use this feature, but recipients will be charged according to their own plan.  Click on the provider name to go to their instructions to text from your online account: Verizon  AT&T.

Apple iMessage

If you’re an Apple lover than you'll be happy to know that you can use iMessage on more than just your phone.  You must be using MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with OS X Mountain Lion.  Just open the app, insert your message and recipient’s phone number, hit send, and you’re done!  This feature will only work if the recipient is also an iPhone user with iMessage installed.

SMS Websites

SMS websites let you send text messages to anyone anywhere.  They offer free messaging to international users all over the globe.  With this method being a free online service, there could be some drawbacks.  Some will ask you to provide an email address in order to get responses to your messages.

Or there are some that ask you to register and create an account in order to use their services.  So keep in mind the things you will need to do with using a website like this.  You can try Send SMS Now or A Free SMS.

Google Voice

With Google Voice, you do not need to know what carrier your friend or family member uses.  You are able to choose a new number to use at no cost, or use your current mobile number.  This option is restricted to only sending texts in the United States and Canada.   Of course Google offers more than just texting, you can make a phone call or check your voicemail.
