49ers trade up: Team’s general manager doesn’t give much insight into what team is planning in upcoming draft.
Officials with the San Fransisco 49ers, fresh off of a Super Bowl run (and loss), are looking to trade some of the team’s 13 draft picks and get a higher position in the draft. But while reports indicate that the team managers are looking at some type of deal to get the 13th or 14th slot (the highest they currently have is 31st), General Manager Trent Baalke isn’t giving many hints into what top management is thinking.
“You’re not going to get a straight answer from me,” Baalke told the Christian Science Monitor. “It’s possible that we could draft any position. We’re not opposed to draft any position. I’ve always maintained there’s good players at every position. It’s our job to find them. We treat the seventh round the same way we treat the first round.”
While the first 49ers pick is 31st overall, the team does have one of the first picks in the second round, with the 34th overall pick. The team also has two picks each in rounds two through four.
Meanwhile, not trading up at all is still an option, according to Baalke.
“There’s a pool of players that I would think that many around the league have similar value on. That pool is large,” Baalke said. “Could you get the same player at No. 39 or No. 45 that you’re going to get at No. 20? That’s certainly a possibility.”
A perfect trade could be in the works, though--a source told Metro New York that the New York Jets are considering trading down from the number 13 spot.
The 2013 draft starts on April 25, and runs through April 25.
