The Infiniti QX50 is one big vehicle. It measures 184.7 inches long, 66.0 inches tall, and 85 inches wide; the size makes for a strong presence and stately positioning.
This big, strong vehicle is powered by a 2.0-liter VC-Turbo 4-cylinder engine that delivers 268 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. Infiniti’s VC-Turbo technology automatically changes the engine compression ratio to optimize for either efficiency or power depending on the situation.
The QX50’s fuel economy is estimated at 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway for a 26 mpg combined average. However, my week of driving netted me just over 29 mpg, driving mostly in the city.
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with manual shift mode makes for a smooth ramp-up of speed.
There are numerous luxury cars on the market that are big, but size alone doesn’t necessarily guarantee comfort. Infiniti QX50 starts with its wheat-colored leatherette seats that are wide and soft, then add 8-way power adjustment so front occupants can quickly find a comfortable sitting position. 2-way power lumbar is yet one more perk for the driver.
60/40-split fold-down backseat with slide-and-recline, leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, and leather accented shifter blends comfort with the aroma of luxury.
With rear-view monitor, power liftgate, and Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Start, it’s easy to load your cargo and start your adventure with an additional layer of safety. Infiniti InTouch infotainment system with an upper 8-inch and a lower 7-inch LCD touchscreens keeps you visually appraised of your driving situation and instrument status.
The touchscreens also host Infiniti Drive Mode Selector, which lets you set your driving pace. The audio system with AM/FM/CD, plus Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming helps your driving mood. But there was some difficulty for me concerning sound adjustment; it took me forever to find the sound prompt that would bring up the tone and bass adjustment controls. Even then, it appeared the bass could not be turned down low enough for me.
My QX50 wore a coat of Liquid Platinum color over its stylish sheet metal, enhancing curves and contours into a perfect exterior balance. Body-colored door handles with chrome accents and front LED welcome lights assist your mount and dismount movements. Attractive front raindrop-initiated windshield wipers are added for both safety and practicality.
Panoramic tinted-glass power moonroof with one-touch open/close/tilt and a power sunshade bring the clarity of the day and romance of the night into the cabin’s focus.
LED signature daytime running lights, LED front fog lights and illuminated vanity mirrors bring attentive-light and reflection to the beautifully designed interior.
All the good looks of the Infiniti sit on attractive 20-inch wheels and tires.
The Essential AWD trim sits at the top of the model line, and carries an MSRP of $45,450.
There were several Packages offered. Two of those deserve extra exploring.
The ProActive Package ($2,000) includes just about every safety feature you can imagine. Familiar tech like Blind Spot Intervention, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Departure Prevention, High Beam Assist and Direct Adaptive Steering Wheel are bundled with Steering Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control with Full-Speed Range and Stop and Hold, plus the Premium Heat Package.
The $7,500 Sensory Package listed over 20 premium features, including motion activated liftgate, Bose Performance Series Premium Audio with 16 speakers, Advance Climate Control System, climate-controlled front seats, rear side window sun shades, and Natural Maple Wood interior trim.
This Infiniti cross-over envelops occupants with tailored premium materials while providing a pleasant driving experience. It exhibits fine craftsmanship with artistic designs. The luxury touches improve the appearance and help to express the ambience of the vehicle.
The QX50 handles well, flowing into the curve and produces quick acceleration on the straightaway. It allows you to sit tall in a quiet, spacious cabin, with a caravan of digital and safety technologies.
