2 million cigarette butts were found during a recent cleanup of the ocean, said a conservatory group.
The Ocean Conservancy said that volunteers took out several million pounds of garbage during the 2012 International Coastal Cleanup day, as first reported by Yahoo News.
“Many of the most commonly found pieces of trash include items we use every day from food wrappers to beverage containers to plastic bags,” the group said in a statement on its website.
Of that, around 2,117,931 cigarette butts, 1,140,222 food wrappers and containers, 1,065,171 plastic beverage bottles, 1,019,902 plastic bags, 958,893 bottle caps, more than 690,000 plastic utensils, 611,000 straws and stirrers, 521,000 glass bottles, 339,000 beverage cans, and nearly 300,000 paper bags were taken out.
They also found 117 mattresses, around 2,500 sports balls, 4,159 candles, and 40 lottery tickets.
