19 Year-old German Wins Eurovision Song Contest

A 19-year-old from Germany won this year’s Eurovision song competition on Saturday, Europe’s biggest and oldest singing competition.

Lena Meyer-Landrut performed in Oslo for a crowd of 18,000 while millions watched on television and online according to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) website.

Meyer-Landrut, represented her country by singing American dance song “Satellite” in slightly raspy accented English.

She beat participants from 39 other European countries. All countries in the contest have EBU broadcast stations. EBU is an association of broadcast networks in Europe, and hosts the competition.

Participants are judged by juries in each country as well as by televoters who decide the winner based on a point system. Voters are not allowed to vote for performers from their country.

This year was the 55th contest and events had to be somewhat scaled back due to tough economic conditions.
