University of Duke Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski embraced his mentor Bob Knight at center court on Tuesday, moments after a 74-69 victory against Michigan State. The win was his 903 career victory, breaking Knight’s all-time NCAA record.
“I wouldn’t be in this position without him. It’s a moment shared,” Krzyzewski said of Knight. “I know he’s very proud and I’m very proud to have been somebody who’s worked under him and studied him and tried to be like him.”
Knight, who was calling the game for ESPN, was among many of “Coach K’s” supporters. Former players Grant Hill, Shane Battier and Carlos Boozer all cheered their former coach on to victory.
The game gave No. 6 Duke its third victory on the season while Michigan State fell to 0-2 after losing to No. 1 North Carolina on Friday.
The Hall of Fame Coach is a four-time NCAA champion and also coached the U.S. men’s Olympic team to a gold medal in 2008 at the Beijing games.
