14-year-old burger: A Utah man has kept a burger since 1999, and it still purportedly looks the same.
David Whipple said on the television show “The Doctors” that he didn’t keep the burger for such a long time on purpose.
“I was showing some people how enzymes work and I thought a hamburger would be a good idea,” he said, according to the Daily Mail. “And I used it for a month and then I forgot about it.”
The burger was in the original sack in an old coat.
While the burger doesn’t appear to have any signs of mold or anything that would make it inedible, pictures show the pickle disappearing into the top bun. The bun also remained remarkably intact.
Whipple, who lives in Logan, Utah, said he and his wife recently pulled it out of the closet upon finding it. The original reciept says the hamburger cost $0.79.
A radio station offered Whipple $5,000 for the burger; a disc jockey was planning on heating it up and eating it on air.
Whipple declined, and now uses the burger to encourage his grandchildren to eat healthy.
“It’s great for my grand-kids to see--To see what happens with fast food,” he said.
Update: McDonald’s said that the burger had stayed intact for so long because of dry conditions.
