Amy Winehouse’s 30th birthday would have been Saturday and her parents are holding a month’s worth of events, while a portrait of the British singer was sold for charity.
The BBC reported that the portrait, an oil painting, sold for $800 at an auction that in all, raised more than $5,000. It was sold at Concorde Club in Eastleigh, Hampshire.
Winehouse died in July 2011 and an inquest found she drank too much alcohol.
“I’m a big fan of Amy Winehouse so it was a real privilege to have been asked and I took it on with relish,” the artist, James Wilkinson, told the BBC.
In London’s Camden neighborhood where she lived, her memory is being preserved. “Amy is so synonymous with Camden,” Camden Mayor Jonathan Simpson said. “There’s a real sense of pride in her legacy locally. ”
“Camden meant everything to Amy, and Camden recognizes that,” the singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse, told AP.
Her family, the Amy Winehouse Foundation, was set up to help young people stay away from drugs and nurture musical talent.
