American University (AU) in Washington, D.C. was on lockdown on Wednesday night after a report of a gunman on campus. The university lifted the lockdown after about an hour-and-a-half at 9:24 p.m.

An alert from the university said that a man with a gun was seen on campus, and that police were investigating, including near Gray Hall, where the man was reported.

The university said that the campus is on lockdown and ordered everyone to shelter-in-place. Helicopters were overhead and dozens of police officers were on the scene.

The university said in an update: “If you see either of these ppl, please DO NOT approach. Call 202-885-3636.” The man in the picture is reportedly an off-duty police officer with a gun, and was taken into custody.
