Reports say that nine people were killed and 30 were injured in shootings across Chicago over the weekend.
Police told
CBS Chicago that 20 of the shootings were gang-related.
“We saw a higher victim count in that incident as the exchange turned into a gun battle between our offenders and victims,” Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said, according to the CBS affiliate.
On Sunday, the most recent shooting took place at around 5 p.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. A man was sitting on a porch when a gunman walked through a gate and started shooting. The victim was identified as 26-year-old Gregory Jodie and was later pronounced dead, CBS reported.
One of the shootings on Sunday sent a 12-year-old boy to the hospital as well as a 40-year-old man, ABC7
reported. The victims, police said, were standing outside near 99th and Perry Avenue when a person drove up and began shooting.
On Sunday, a mass shooting early in the morning killed one and injured five more people in the West Woodlawn neighborhood. People were gathered outside when someone pulled up and fired shots.
“He didn’t make it,” yelled one of the women at the emergency room, referring to the shooting, Fox32
reported. “That’s bogus as hell. They won’t let me go and see my son again.”
The Chicago Sun-Times
reported that eight people were shot on Monday. There were no deaths. Reports
said that a man was shot on the Red Line metro train after getting into an argument at the station on Monday. The gunman fled the scene, and police don’t know why they were arguing.
The Chicago Tribune
reported that more than 1,000 people have been shot in Chicago in 2018.
According to the Chicago Tribune, “As of early Monday at least 1,071 people have been shot this year, below the last two years when violence hit record levels in the city but well above other recent years. There have been at least 202 homicides, the data shows.”
Last
weekend, one person died and 30 were shot in Chicago shootings.
Chicago saw a drop in homicides in 2017, but more than 600 people were shot and killed. “You still have to start with the fact that 600 people dead in Chicago is a hell of a lot of people to be dead in one year,” said the Rev. Marshall Hatch earlier this year, according to
NBC News.In 2016, Chicago experienced 762 murders and had 4,331 shooting victims—the worst in decades, according to reports at the
time.
