ARCADIA, Calif.—A 2-year-old colt who had not yet had a race died while training at Santa Anita Park, state horse racing officials announced.
Majestic Sam died Nov. 19 after suffering an unspecified training injury at the Arcadia track. The website Equibase shows that he completed a workout that day and recorded the seventh-fastest time out of 24 horses.
Majestic Sam is the 12th racehorse to die from a racing or training injury at Santa Anita this year, and the eighth to die of a training injury.
Early in September, Echosmith, a 3-year-old gelding from Ireland, died from a training injury at the track.
In April, a 3-year-old filly also died after suffering a training injury. Magnolia suffered what was described as a “musculoskeletal” injury and was euthanized, according to the California Horse Racing Board and the track.
A total of 42 horses died at the facility in 2019, sparking widespread debate about safety issues at the track and about horse racing in general. The uproar led to procedural and veterinary oversight changes at the park.
