5 GOP Senators Donate to Opponent of Trump-Endorsed Senate Candidate in Alabama

Five Republican senators donated a total of $25,000 to the Senate campaign of Katie Britt, the primary opponent of the Trump-endorsed Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.)

Britt served as the chief of staff for Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), whose seat she and Brooks are now vying for. She announced her run for Senate in June, two months after former President Donald Trump endorsed Brooks.

According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records first reported by Politico, the political action committees for five GOP senators donated to Britt’s campaign: Sen. Michael Crapo’s (R-Idaho) Freedom Fund, Sen. Debra Fischer’s (R-Neb.) Nebraska Sandhills PAC, Sen. James Inhofe’s (R-Okla.) Fund for a Conservative Future, Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) Jobs Opportunity and New Ideas PAC, and Shelley Moore Capito’s (R-W.Va.) Wild and Wonderful PAC.

None of the five senators have donated to Brooks’s campaign, according to FEC records.

Britt most recently served as the head of the Alabama Business Council.

In the ad announcing her candidacy, she said it was “an honor” to stand with Shelby to “help build President Trump’s border wall” and to confirm Trump’s conservative nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump said in a statement in July that Britt is not qualified.

“I see that the RINO Sen from Ala, close friend of Old Crow Mitch McConnell, Richard Shelby, is pushing hard to have his ‘assistant’ fight the great Mo Brooks for his Senate seat,” Trump said, using an acronym for Republican in name only. “She is not in any way qualified and is certainly not what our Country needs.”

Shelby endorsed Britt days after she announced her candidacy in June.

“She’s like family. She’d make a good candidate. She’s probably the best-qualified candidate to come along in a long time,” Shelby told Politico. “I’d support her, I’d vote for her.”

Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), both of whom won their seats in 2020 with Trump’s support, attended a fundraiser for Britt last week, according to Politico.

“I like Katie a lot,” Graham told Politico. “In a party trying to grow demographically and pull more women in the party, that'd be a good thing. The people of Alabama will figure that out.”

Graham added that Brooks has “a strong profile in Alabama, but Katie’s not giving an inch... We'll see what happens.”

The Epoch Times requested a comment from Trump.
