This Grand Cherokee 4xe is a plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV that drives the wheels a 2.0L turbo engine assisted by an electric motor. This PHEV powerplant is capable of generating a maximum of 375 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All models have an 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
The fuel consumption for this PHEV is rated at 56 MPGe combined, and running on gasoline only it goes down to 23 mpg.
The Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe tips the scale at 6,900 pounds (GVWR) and has a max towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. It is a heavy and strong vehicle because of the high-strength alloys and a “sprinkling of composites,” as reflected in the newly designed lift gate.
Outside, this hybrid Grand Cherokee has a stubby front with an overhang, flanked by a trapezoidal fenders. My tester was coated in Baltic Gray Metallic Clear-Coat/Black Clear-Coat two-tone paint. The outside color went great with the Global Black interior, but this black color interior took longer to cool down during our recent heat wave, even with the strong air conditioner.
The Summit Reserve 4xe sits nicely on 21″ x 9″ fully-painted aluminum wheels wearing performance all-season tires.
Inside, Palermo Leather seats complimented the deluxe headliner that also blended well with same leather and color of the door trim and open-pore wood accents.
Uconnect 5 Nav with 10.1-inch Touch Screen Display features Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Great sound was delivered by the McIntosh Sound System with 19 speakers.
The 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster complements the heated three-spoke steering wheel with control buttons. The Rotary Shifter is just below the climate control and air suspension switches in the center console. This shifter knob was large enough, it was so easy to use even when you are wearing gloves.
Don’t worry about cargo because Grand Cherokee 4xe offers 37.7 cubic-feet of cargo space that can be expanded to 70.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Summit Reserve model has a full list of standard safety features, like Select Terrain System, Traffic Sign Recognition, Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, and Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection to name a few.
The electrified Grand Cherokee 4xe is not just for urban recreational use, but a wilderness explorer as well. The underside of the body is protected with a enforced housing, and the battery pack is water-sealed, allowing the 4xe to drive through 24 inches of water. It can be equipped with Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II 4×4 systems.
The Quadra-Drive II system features a two-speed transfer case and uses sensors to detect tire slippage and redirect power for maximum traction. Jeep claims the Quadra-Drive II system is their most advanced and rugged four-wheel drive system. It is an all-time 4×4 system with an electronic Limited Slip Differential (LSD) to distribute power to individual wheels as needed.
Even though the 4xe is a plug-in hybrid, it has plenty of acceleration thrust and towing capability.
Jeep’s Grand Cherokee 4xe line offers a premier package for luxury utility vehicle that provides comfort and ruggedness on hybrid fuel efficiency.
The MSRP for the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe starts at $58,095 for the base model. Summit Reserve is the top-of–line model and carries a list price of $74,695.
