LOS ANGELES—Police are looking May 2 for suspects who stabbed two students near Los Angeles High School in what Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho called another “senseless” attack.
The students, both 16, who were stabbed were taken to a hospital trauma center and are in stable condition, police said.
The attack occurred around 4:30 p.m. Monday near the school in the 4600 block of Olympic Boulevard, between West and Rimpau boulevards, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The stabbing “was the result of an on-campus dispute,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). The department also confirmed the victims were students.
Carvalho said the attack was “another senseless stabbing in our community near Los Angeles High School.”
“Our thoughts go out to the two victims and their families,” he said. “All of our students deserve to go to school free of fear and full of hope. We must work together to continue to provide safe passages to and from school.
“Law enforcement is currently investigating this incident, and we are working with the school to ensure our campus remains safe. Counselors and mental health support will be provided to those who may need it in school.”
The Los Angeles Times reported school police had been near the campus until shortly before the stabbings occurred as part of the “safe passage” program, which provides patrols before and after school, Los Angeles School Police Department officials said.
Officers left the school to respond to a report that a gun had been found at another campus.
According to reports from the scene, police said they believe the suspects left the area in two vehicles.
LAPD and Los Angeles School Police blocked the roadway in the area along the school’s southwest corner for their investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported.
