HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.—A 46-year-old man was killed when he was struck by an SUV on a major street in Huntington Beach, authorities said on Sept. 11.
The crash occurred at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 10 on Beach Boulevard, north of Speer Drive and south of Slater Avenue, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department’s Jessica Cuchilla.
The injured Huntington Beach man was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Ms. Cuchilla said.
The man was struck by a 2003 Lincoln Navigator that was southbound on Beach Boulevard in lane four, she said.
The 33-year-old Huntington Beach woman driving the Navigator remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, Ms. Cuchilla said.
The police department’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was investigating the crash and anyone who witnessed it or events leading up to it was asked to call Traffic Investigator Rattanchandani at 714-536-5231.
The city declared September Pedestrian Safety Month on Sept. 5 urging drivers to go cautiously.
“There’s a lot happening on our roads, and everyone deserves to get to their destination safely,” Police Sergeant Mike Thomas said in a press release on Sept. 5. “Drivers need to be aware of people who are walking. Please slow down and never drive impaired.”
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrians account for over 25 percent of all traffic deaths in California.
