UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill.—Shen Yun Performing Arts is known throughout the performing arts world, and singer Julia Lindsay thought she might be one of the few in her industry who hadn’t yet seen the innovative arts company.
“The way they sang, the way they used their voices,” she said, “it made me feel like I was part of their culture.”
The artists aim to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and art. Besides promoting classical Chinese dance, which is one of the world’s most comprehensive dance systems alongside ballet, Shen Yun features unique musical components as well.
The program Ms. Lindsay saw featured two bel canto singers, accompanied by piano. She thought the singers’ voices and artistry were excellent and said she enjoyed the pianist’s classical approach as well.
“I mean, her touch on the keyboard was just beautiful, really beautiful,” she said.
“The beautiful costumes—and the colors!” Ms. Lindsay said. “And [the] backdrop—oh my goodness! That was exquisitely timed, the way they came in and out of the background. Oh, magnificent!”
“Magnificent! I mean, the whole show,” she said. “Thank you for the exquisite quality.”
