HOUSTON—Attorney Peter Stuhldreher and his wife Sarah, a company owner, attended Shen Yun’s matinee on Dec. 31 at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in Houston. The couple also brought their two children.

“The colors and the dancing were beautiful. The stories were so vivid—it was very moving,” said Mr. Stuhldreher. “I’ve never seen anything like that. It was very cool.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Its artists seek to revive the glory of China’s 5,000 years of history and share through a series of short dance pieces all that is good and beautiful in China before communism.
The artists are expected to visit over 200 cities this season.

However, because some dance pieces expose the crimes of the Chinese communist regime, Shen Yun is currently banned from performing in China.

Ms. Stuhldreher is a fan of The Epoch Times and learned about Shen Yun through the newspaper. She thought the show was a perfect educational opportunity for her children.

“This was my second time [seeing Shen Yun]. I brought my son on the first trip. It’s really important for people to bring their children because, as Ronald Reagan had said, we’re only ever one generation away from communism,” she commented.

“It’s very important to me that my children see the preservation of culture and history, and the beauty and truth in people. That should not be erased by communism.”

She said it’s important for children to see that “communism eats truth and beauty and the love of God that we all share, yet these are the things we should all be able to have.”

Seven-year-old Sabrina said that she had a great time and thought the dances were beautiful. She was very happy to have come.
Moreover, Ms. Stuhldreher loved Shen Yun’s story-based dances because many of them were humorous and had great morals as well. It’s perfect for teaching children.

Kids can see that though the main character in one story “failed in the first place, they kept working harder and persevered. It’s an easy story for children to follow,” she said.

Mr. Stuhldreher agreed and stressed that kids should all come to “see [traditional] Chinese culture and understand the values of a different culture—especially China before communism—so they can fully understand the importance of freedom.”
