VANCOUVER, Canada—Business owner Dave McCammon and his partner Nina Dinh, a beauty salon owner, on March 21 attended Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Exiting the matinee, Mr. McCammon couldn’t praise Shen Yun enough.

“It was good; it was a great experience,” he exclaimed.

“It was very insightful, the production was good, the dancing was awesome, and I liked the colors—lots of beautiful colors in there— and the stories were cool. I really enjoyed it.”

As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with a deeply spiritual foundation, China’s 5,000 years of history are filled with breathtaking legends and rich traditions.

Yet, within just a few decades of the Chinese communists’ rise to power, this magnificent culture was nearly all but destroyed. The spread of atheism quickly eradicated Chinese people’s belief in the divine.

Today, New York-based Shen Yun is working to revive this lost civilization and bring back the beauty of pre-communist China through dance and music.

Nina Dinh, who joined Mr. McCammon for the afternoon, had tears in her eyes. She thought every part of the show was beautiful.

“I loved the traditional Chinese music and all the beautiful dances. The dancing is phenomenal, and the spiritual part of the show [reflected] people’s connections,” she expressed.

The couple especially enjoyed Shen Yun’s short story-based dances that recount tales from ancient times to the modern day.

“When I saw my partner crying over one of the moments in the [story], that was special to my heart,” Mr. McCammon stated. “The history and love stories were cool. [The performers] did a really good job.”

Referring to the spiritual elements of Shen Yun, Mr. McCammon said the message he will be taking home with him is that “the old traditions are being lost, and we’re going into a spiral in the downward way if we’re not following in the direction of the traditions.”

“It’s an important message,” he added. “We need to stick to the traditional ways and not fall off the path into the way that we’re headed.”
