PORTLAND, Ore.—On March 17, ballet instructors Anguelina and Lena Kouznetsova arrived in high spirits at the Keller Auditorium, eager for what Shen Yun Performing Arts has to offer.

Though the duo saw various poster ads for the show throughout the years, the timing never seemed quite right. This year, Anguelina took a leap of faith and purchased tickets.

She was rendered speechless.

“It was truly wonderful. Very impressive,” Anguelina shared after the matinee, searching hard for the right words to describe her experience.

Every piece was so good it was impossible to pick a favorite.

“I would tell the dancers that they’re doing a phenomenal job and to keep working hard. It’s really, really, truly beautiful to watch.”

The world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, Shen Yun is famed for its series of short dance pieces that take the audience on a ride through the dynasties and across vast regions of China.

“It was so interesting,” Lena reflected. “It offers a view into parts of our lives—like the [story dance about] the restaurant—it’s hard to explain how fantastic it was, how real everything was in the dance. It’s beautiful and fantastic.”
Shen Yun’s New York-based performers are highly trained in classical Chinese dance. Dating back thousands of years, it is one of the most athletic and expressive art forms in the world.

According to the company’s website, the classical Chinese dance we see in China today is heavily mixed with military and modern dance styles. Only at Shen Yun can you find it performed in its purest form—the way it was originally passed down through the generations.

Lena gaped at the stunning techniques.

“The synchronization, they did it all together. It’s beautiful. I have watched so many shows around the world, and I will watch this show again because of how beautiful and masterful the dancers are,” she gushed.

“Everything, together with the [innovative 3D] backdrop, was amazing. It’s the first time I’ve seen that—how people [appeared to] fly and come onto the stage—It’s just amazing. I think it’s especially interesting for young people.”

For 5,000 years, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.

Shen Yun is on a mission to return to the world’s stage—the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

“I really like it when nations try to [preserve and] save their traditions,” Lena noted thoughtfully.

“I was so happy to see that Shen Yun has brought their singers, traditional music, and instruments with them. It’s not just dance—they brought everything—like a bouquet of beautiful flowers. I really recommend it.”
