PORTLAND, Ore.—Chris Fenning had seen Shen Yun Performing Arts advertised for years and decided tickets to the world-renowned classical Chinese dance performance would make the perfect Christmas gift. On March 16, Mr. Fenning and his wife, Beth, saw Shen Yun for the first time and left uplifted and inspired by the performance at the Keller Auditorium.

“It’s absolutely beautiful,” Mrs. Fenning said of her gift.

Mr. Fenning, a vice president in the health services industry, said he took note of when the emcees said that in traditional Chinese culture, “music was a form of medicine,” the two written characters had the same root.

“It heals the soul from the inside out, and I believe that,” he said. He added that he was walking away from the performance “with a whole different attitude and feeling uplifted.”

Shen Yun was established in New York in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through musicand dance.

Mrs. Fenning commented that it seemed that traditional Chinese culture could only thrive outside of China with the communist regime in power today, but the couple saw hope in Shen Yun.

“It really makes you want to learn more, too, about the culture that’s now missing in the Chinese society,” she said.
“History is everything. You learn from it,” Mr. Fenning agreed. He wanted to encourage the artists to continue on. “Maintain that passion that you have in what you’re doing because you’re making a difference for other people.”
