KAWAGUCHI, Japan—Shen Yun Performing Arts finished its third and last performances at the Kawaguchi Comprehensive Cultural Center Lilianthis season on the afternoon of Jan. 19. An association chair in the audience said Shen Yun was “a grace bestowed by divine beings” after attending the show.

“When the curtain was first opened, a palace from heaven was shining just in front of me. My heart was full of expectations at that moment. I was shocked by that divine power,” said Mr. Nemoto Terunao, the chair of a gut health association in Kawaguchi.

Mr. Nemoto enjoyed the performance, during which, he said “I didn’t dare to blink” so as to avoid missing any moment.

“The dance, in which female dancers dressed in costumes featuring long, flowing sleeves, is extremely beautiful. I was mesmerized by it. I felt very happy when I saw it,” he said. “The dancers coordinate seamlessly. They are on the level of heavenly maidens.”

Mr. Nemoto was also impressed by male dancers.

“They are very handsome and valiant. Their dances are full of energy, which is fantastic,” he said. After seeing their Tibetan dance, Mr. Nemoto said, “I want to visit Tibet now.”

Mr. Nemoto said Shen Yun “is really spectacular.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to show the beauty and goodness of “China before communism.” For 5,000 years China’s civilization was built on values and virtues from the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

‘In the end, I Found Hope’

“Shen Yun explains the connection among heaven, earth, and humans from artistic angle. I felt it touched my soul,” said Ms. Satou Mealaya, a singer.

Ms. Satou specializes in Portuguese music. She said she felt strong energy from Shen Yun.

“From the beginning, all cells inside my body were activated. Some energy just passed through my body,” she said. “I could feel dancers, soloists, and orchestra were spreading positive energy during the show. The energy is given to each of us theatergoers.”

Ms. Satou said that Shen Yun artists have excellent skills and techniques, and they also have a strong spiritual power.

“I had a wonderful time. The performance is great. The dancers, music, and everything is so harmonious and graceful. I felt very happy and relaxed,” she said.

Shen Yun translates as “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Ms. Satou said she felt that Shen Yun helped her to connect with divine beings.

“In the end, I found hope. I felt that everything will be fine no matter what happened. We will have peace because we, humans, are taken care of by a great being,” she said.

Each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes, presented through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more.

Nostalgic for Shen Yun’s Music

Mr. Yazawa Jakuho, a Japanese flower arrangement artist, said he enjoyed the erhu, an ancient two-stringed instrument.

“When the virtuoso played Erhu, a lot of my memories were recalled. The sound is like therapy. I was very touched,” he said.

Mr. Sekiguchi Kiyoshi is a visiting professor at Digital Hollywood University and the manager of Birdland Band. He enjoyed Shen Yun’s music.

“The Chinese character of the music is very familiar. The feeling is like I heard them before, though I haven’t,” he said. “It’s an excellent arrangement that my seat is so close to the orchestra and could listen to them from this close distance.”

The music that Shen Yun’s orchestra played is dedicated composed for the dances. Every year, Shen Yun puts on an all-new production, including new choreography, music, costumes, and backdrop sets.

Mrs. Sekiguchi Yoko, is a pharmacist and practiced ballet when she was young.

“I love Shen Yun’s story-telling method,” she said. “When the curtain opened, it was very impressive. The backdrop was showing the stories and interacting with the dancers on the stage.”

Mrs. Sekiguchi said the figures on the backdrop landed on the stage when the stories needed, which surprised  and amazed her.

“This is a great creation. I enjoyed the method. I enjoyed the stories,” she said.

“I also think this method is very good. Without any words, we receive the messages clearly and with happiness,” said Mr. Sekiguchi. “The programs entertained us. It’s very easy for us to be mesmerized by them, and think about the meaning.”

The Sekiguchi’s said they would recommend Shen Yun to their friends.
