SALT LAKE CITY—On March 21, physician Corey Rammell and his daughter Sonja enjoyed Shen Yun’s third of seven consecutive performances at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater.

The duo selected front-row seats for a close view of both the dancers and Shen Yun’s live orchestra.

“It’s beautiful. It’s a very wonderful cultural experience to see. [The show] gives somewhat of a sentimental, joyful feeling,” Mr. Rammell expressed.

“I’m so impressed with not only the artistry but the grace and flexibility and the athleticism—it’s all amazing.”

Sonja, too, loved the performance.

“I think [Shen Yun] helps you to connect to the world. You have to step out of your bubble and I feel like young people should definitely see it because it’s just cool. I found a lot of it interesting,” she said.  “When you’re young, you should learn as much as you can.”
The New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the communist party.

For 5,000 years, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.

The artists’ dream is to return to the world’s stage—the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Mr. Rammell fully supports this mission and added that Shen Yun’s spiritual element gave him “insights into traditional Chinese culture.” Yet, its beauty also made him “hurt for the loss of it.”

“It’s kind of heart-wrenching to see the tragedy of the loss because of the suppression and communism. It’s too bad.”
Due to the company’s focus on reviving traditional culture and presenting the truth of events under communist rule in present-day China, Shen Yun is banned from performing in China.

“There’s such a rich culture that we as Americans need to be exposed to and really appreciate. I’m so happy that this performance is being done and [its mission is] able to be communicated to people. It’s such a wonderful tradition, and we’d hate to lose it,” Mr. Rammell stated.

“[Shen Yun] gives us a real opportunity to have a connection to China and its history—we don’t see this type of dance or art in any other culture. It’s really beautiful.”
