AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France—Ballet reached its peak under the reign of King Louis XIV, and now, Shen Yun Performing Arts is introducing pure classical Chinese dance into the Western world.
Sophie Fanucchi is a retired dancer, and she was most impressed by the flawless technique of Shen Yun’s artists.

“Very beautiful show. It combines dance, which was very artistic, with a very acrobatic side,” said Ms. Fanucchi.

Classical Chinese dance is an ancient dance form. Many of the popular sports we see today, such as gymnastics and acrobatics, all originate from classical Chinese dance.

Ms. Fanucchi commented that seeing the tumbling techniques in Shen Yun made her “recognize them as gymnastic movements. And in fact they’re not. So I learned tonight that gymnastics originated from classical Chinese dance.”

Through dance, Shen Yun is able to bring many of the values that were present in China before communism to life.

Ms. Fanucchi shared that in Shen Yun, she saw the values of “Goodness, acceptance of others, kindness, patience—these are things we no longer have. In fact, today, we just don’t have the time.”

Chinese history is filled with beautiful stories that convey a reverence for the divine. Ms. Fanucchi shared that Shen Yun’s portrayal of these stories has led her to understand that people on Earth are linked with divinity.

“You can feel that everything is ultimately linked. That today, the human being [is linked] with the divinities,” she said.

She added that seeing Shen Yun was as if entering a bubble where time stopped.

“It’s true that this is a little break—a bubble in which, for 2 hours—time stops and we finally take our time,” she said.

Shen Yun is based in New York and it currently has eight companies touring the world simultaneously. Each company includes a live orchestra which blends instruments of the East and West, creating unique and energetic music.

“A live orchestra is priceless. [Shen Yun] is extraordinary in terms of the music, and the conductor was just majestic,” complimented Ms. Fanucchi.

Shen Yun’s use of the digital backdrop is a patented technique. Throughout the performance, the backdrop plays an important role in storytelling.

“There was this combination of everything that’s ancient and profound with this very modern backdrop that brings us up to date with today’s technology. I thought it was magnificent, really. A show I highly recommend,” said Ms. Fanucchi.

Ms. Fanucchi’s husband, Anthony Fanucchi, is a manager in a building company. He shared his feeling of Shen Yun being a voice of freedom.

“What I felt most of all was freedom. We need to regain our freedom,” he said.

Shen Yun’s performance depicts the oppression of Falun Gong practitioners in China today. From a broader perspective, it is the portrayal of the lack of human rights in China.

“The most important thing is to have the freedom of expression and the freedom to live how you want to live,” shared Mr. Fanucchi.

Mr. Fanucchi shared that Shen Yun encouraged him to look on the bright side of matters.

“It’s all about finding the best in yourself and the positive things in life,” he said.

He added that the performance made him feel, “Positive energy, something touching, something that brings us back to ourselves.”
