SAO PAULO, Brazil—Renowned plastic surgeon Lecy Marcondes Cabral and his girlfriend, Inew Camargo Mendes Pereira enjoyed the sixth of Shen Yun’s seven consecutive performances at Teatro Bradesco on the evening of March 21.
Mr. Lecy, in particular, was wowed by the diversity of Shen Yun’s programs and thought it was a breath of fresh air.
“They also portrayed modern Chinese society—I thought that was very interesting because some people in Brazil are very much leaning toward the communist side but [Shen Yun] is not! Those who came here thinking they’d show something pro-communist were shocked.”
“It’s such a beautiful show!”
Ms. Cabral loved the spiritual elements of Shen Yun.
“I think [the artists’] harmony reflected their beliefs. It brought us that spirituality.”
Following the 1949 communist takeover, Chinese traditional culture was systematically eradicated by the ruling regime. According to the company’s website, Shen Yun returns each year with a brand-new set of programs that showcases the beauty of “China before communism.”
However, for their insistence on reviving traditional culture and telling the truth about human rights issues in modern Chinese society, Shen Yun is currently banned by the ruling communist party from performing in China.
Also, in the audience were lawyers Telma Cristina de Carlos and Getulio Jose de Arauja Silva.
The couple was amazed by the technique and agility of Shen Yun’s dancers and deeply lamented that Shen Yun cannot be seen in China.
“[The performers] were wonderful. We loved it and we’re excited!” Ms. Carlos said.
Mr. Silva was pleasantly Shen Yun’s depiction of the heavens and the divine.
“I always thought China was not too spiritual. As it turned out, they are. Just like us!”
“It was amazing! We don’t know much about Chinese culture. We’ve heard about Mongolia and Manchuria and have seen these places on film—but to see [the performance] live, we’re impressed. The dancers were so synchronized, it was perfect! Their depiction of truth and compassion were wonderful.”
Mr. Silva added excitedly that “I’ve never seen a theatre show like this before. It was fantastic and unbelievable what I saw. If I can, I’ll travel to [Shen Yun’s next performing city] to see it again!”
