IAH shooting: A man died at a Houston airport, though it’s unclear what happened.

“At 1:35 p.m. we received a report of a discharge of a firearm at a ticket counter,” said Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva, according to local media The Courier. “There was an armed male still going through pre-screening. He hadn’t passed any security check point yet.”

The man had just walked inside the doors of a terminal at George Bush Intercontinental Airport when he fired at least one shot into the ceiling. A Homeland Security special agent who was nearby heard the gunfire and confronted the suspect.

Another police department spokesperson said an autopsy will determine whether the man shot himself identically or on purpose or whether the agent shot him.

Dale Howard, who was at the airport to pick up his sister for a family funeral, told local broadcaster KHOU-11 that “there was two shots, about a two, three second delay,” then another three shots shortly after.

“Very distinctive,” he said. “You just never know.”
