Carnival ship evacuated: The beleaguered Carnival Triumph ship was evacuated following explosions on several fuel barges in Alabama, it was reported.
The Triumph was docked for repairs in Mobile, Ala. after it broke down in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this year. None of the cruise ship’s workers were injured, a company spokesperson told The Associated Press.
The Mobile, Ala. Fire and Rescue said that there were seven explosions on several fuel barges docked in Mobile on Wednesday night, according to WMBF News, an affiliate of NBC.
“We‘ll just let the product burn off and then it’ll put itself out when the fuel is gone. Then we'll go in and make sure everything’s OK,” Mobile Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Dean was quoted by the station as saying.
Coast Guard Lt. Mike Clausen told AP that the cause was likely due to a crew cleaning the barges.
Firefighters eventually extinguished the fire on Thursday.
Worker on Triumph were forced to evacuate the ship as it was located near the barges.
A video of the incident shows a massive fire shooting out from one of the barges before an explosion sends the flames into the sky.
Three workers preparing the barges were severely burned, Mobile fire officials told CNN.
The explosions, according to witness Alan Waugh, sounded similar to “planes above you dropping bombs.”
“We were up on a second floor balcony and the sky lit up in orange and yellow,” he told the network.
